Discussion:
New Group Proposal: alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.wallpapers

As a frequent user of alt.binaries.pictures.wallpapers I say yes to
starting this group in the vain hope that those wish to post PORN wallpaper
can have their own space.

Some of us find porn offensive on an open group like
alt.binaries.pictures.wallpapers, I differenciate here between artistic
nudity and hard core porn.

Having alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.wallpapers would mean we could direct
anyone with an interest in Porn to use that group where it would be on
topic rather than alt.binaries.pictures.wallpapers where technically its on
topic but frowend apon by many users and is the source of constant
complains.

We don't want to censor anyone but but porn is an emotive subject and many
of our users are women who find it degreaging and we also have young users
that we would like to encourage to create wallpapers and this would be
easier without porn.

Currently we do advise that a nudity or Adult tag is used to assist in
filtering but this makes little destinction between artistic nudity and
grotesque hard core porn and actually serves to censor the user rather than
the other way around as setting these filters totaly excludes both artistic
nudity and hard core porn. Hardly fair or an ideal soution.

So I think I speek for many users of alt.binaries.pictures.wallpapers when
I say we support the creation of alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.wallpapers

NIMBY (not in my backyard) groups don't work. You can't tell someone
else where to post what.

I don't think the original proposer is persuing the whole thing now anyway
so it's dead in the water.

I take your point also, which is a very valid point.

You can't please all of the people...

That's is as may be, but no one told you you couldn't send a control

I have 2 questions.

*1st question:*
History question to *both* the alt.config and a.b.p.wallpaper
groups!

When alt.binaries.pictures.wallpaper was being set up, could
alt.binaries.pictures.wallpapers been set up as a mis spelling?

After all, the alt.binaries.pictures.wallpaper (without s) group does
have a formal FAQ and alt.binaries.pictures.wallpapers (with s) group
does not. I know that sometimes in the alt. news groups, the existence
of a FAQ does not mean much.

But again, this is just a question for my own clarity. I know from
passed dealing with the CNEWS newsgroups.rc file that these two groups
could have, and maybe should have been, equated as one an the same.

Plus alt.binaries.pictures.wallpapers in not carried by all ISP's,
were as alt.binaries.pictures.wallpaper is!

*2nd question:*

If the erotica group is to be created, would it not be better to
create it as follows:
alt.binaries.pictures.wallpaper.erotica

This would be similar and in keeping with how other groups are
created.
2 Examples:
alt.binaries.pictures.wallpaper.nonude
alt.binaries.pictures.wallpaper.duplicates

Thanks inadvance.

no, it was created just a couple of years ago, around the same time as
a.b.p.w.duplicates. i don't know the full process of group creation
anymore, but i got the distinct impression that that process was
circumvented some how. at least, that's how i remember the .dupes group's
creation. we were discussing it one day in .utilities; and a few days later
the .dupes group was created. the a.b.p.wallpapers group popped up within
that same week, if memory serves.

we have an FAQ because the folks present in alt.config around 2000 suggested
we take it upon ourselves to write one. the a.b.p.w creators didn't make
one when the group was created in '99. i can't comment on how formal it is.
how "official" are these things considered?

Thank Jeep for clearing that up for me.
So if a.b.p.wallpaper(s) just popped up one day that must
mean someone created a control record that was placed on
in ftp newgroups.rc file at ISC. I wonder if they keep
records as to who submitted the entry?
Of course it just goes to show you that the alt newsgroups
is really one big nice free for all.

So if a.b.p.wallpaper(s) just popped up one day that must
mean someone created a control record that was placed on
in ftp newgroups.rc file at ISC.
STOP TOP POSTING.

You misunderstand the situation.

There is no "ftp newsgroups.rc file at ISC". There is no "control record".
ISC itself provides no central administration services on behalf of
Usenet. Usenet Central Administration is at 1060 W. Addison St. in Chicago
and is owned by Fluffy. You may address your complaints there.

There is a machine cnamed ftp.isc.org with an archive of newgroup
messages, among other things. It does not control Usenet. The set of
newsgroups presented to you was selected by your News administrator. He
may create newsgroups in response to requests. The requests come in the
form of newgroup messages or email messages from users naming a specific
newsgroup to be created. He also has the power to create newsgroups no one
at all had requested. It's his machine; his rules.

Use this syntax for looking at the archive of newgroup and rmgroup
messages for a specific newsgroup:
ftp://ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/control/[top-level-hierarchy]/[group.name].gz
The file will have to be unzipped.

Now, if your News administrator doesn't give a shit that he's created a
newsgroup whose name is clearly a misspelling of an existing newsgroup,
then he's providing you with bad Usenet service and you should take your
business elsewhere.

What the hell are you complaining about? You know what you people are?
A bunch of ass holes. Pure and simple. Easynews just picked up
abpwallpapers.
See, you think if you can't control everything, something is wrong. You
don't like somethings that are being posted, so instead of doing the
logical thing and not downloading it, you try your best to find a way to
stop it.
My news service carries abpwallpapers and I'm glad they do. And I'm
posting there. The news service for Charter cable carries
abpwallpapers. If you don't like what's being posted at abpwallpapers
stay the hell away, because believe me, you're not welcome there any
more than I am here...

The duplicates group and the discussion group were created after I found
someone at alt.config to create them for me.

If you remember jer, there were a lot of posts criticising all the
discussion posts in abpw at the time, and trolls trying to cause trouble.

I found someone at alt.config who had already created groups for other
people. The guy created both the discussion and duplicates groups at the
same time, or within a few days of each other.

The normal discussions in alt.config were indeed circumvented, but the
control messages for the new groups were sent out successfully, almost
overnight.

I doubt if anyone would do this now at alt.config.

Hi Kingdom.
Want work (here in the USA anyway). Most all of the USA ISP are now
dropping any
and all alt.bin* groups. AT&T just follows Verzion and the rest today
with a
forced kill of all alt.bin* and alt.bain* hierarchies.

I suggest we all band together and start trying to use something like
alt.pictures*
or something similar.
But be fore warned even the word erotica could get your group kicked off
a server.
I have not seen it happen just but it could.
